It is my impression that in most places stinging nettle are early season plants. Perhaps that is part of the reason that I had not previously noticed them around Sitka - they came up much later that I would have expeected. Though still discouraging touch, these did not pack nearly the sting of the nettles I have encountered in Idaho.
